She’d bought the white noise machine, the blackout blinds, the specific sleep sack that the book recommended.

Her baby still wasn’t sleeping through the night at five months.

And somewhere in the fog of the fourth week of that, she arrived at a conclusion that felt true and awful: I’m doing this wrong. I’m the problem.

Here is what she was actually doing.

What five months of broken sleep does to a parent

Sleep deprivation at the level new parents experience is classified by researchers as functionally equivalent to intoxication. Studies from Harvard Medical School have found that sustained sleep restriction to four to five hours per night produces impairments in cognitive function, emotional regulation, and decision-making that are comparable to a blood alcohol level above the legal driving limit.

Your 15-month-old refusing their nap isn’t what you think it means

You are reading parenting books, making careful decisions, and performing acts of sustained love and attention while running on a cognitive deficit that would make most other tasks impossible.

And then, in that state, you’re judging yourself against sleep guides written by rested people.

The shame spiral that comes from comparing your exhausted performance to the expected standard is not a sign that you’re failing. It’s a sign that you’re in an objectively difficult situation that the culture around you significantly underestimates.

The parents whose babies sleep aren’t doing more than you. Some of them have a temperamentally easier sleeper. Some got lucky with a developmental timing that went smoothly. Some had a partner, a parent, or a village that gave them more sleep and more bandwidth to be consistent.

You are not behind. You are in the thick of something genuinely hard, doing it largely alone, on very little sleep.

What permission looks like

Put the book down for two days.

Not forever. Just for two days.

Keep one simple thing: a rough bedtime, around the same time each evening, with whatever routine you can manage. Bath if it’s easy. A feed. A song if you have one left in you. That’s enough of a structure to maintain without adding the pressure of a rigidly timed schedule on a day when you have nothing left.

The schedule, the wake windows, the optimization, all of it will still be there in 48 hours. And you’ll be slightly less depleted when you come back to it.

When you’re ready to look at what’s actually happening with your baby’s sleep and where the specific adjustments are, the 5 Month Old Sleep Schedule guide covers the developmental picture in honest, plain terms.

She wasn’t doing it wrong.

She was doing something very hard, very tired, and very much in love.

Those three things, together, is actually the whole job.

She’d read the sleep training book twice.
